Sakurama Michio (櫻間道雄)

Michio SAKURAMA (September 14, 1897 - May 27, 1983) was a Nohgakushi (Noh actor) playing shite (principal roles) of Konparu-ryu school.

He was the second son of Rintaro SAKURAMA (youngest brother of Banma SAKURAMA). At first he studied under his father. Later he studied under his uncle Banma and his cousin Kintaro (later Kyusen SAKURAMA). In 1914 he made his debut as shite in "Tadanori" (TAIRA no Tadanori). In particular, "Sadaie" (FUJIWARA no Sadaie), "Eguchi" (Mouth of sound, Noh play) and "Saigyosakura" (a tree planted by the medieval priest and poet Saigyo) and so on were known as excellent performance.

He received Arts Festival Grand Prize in 1960 and 1967. He received Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts in 1969. In 1970 he was designated as an Individual Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure).
